Transformation Of Indigenous Cooperative Initiatives In Gusiiland, 1904-2002
Matogo, Moseti Dennis
This study surveys the transformation of indigenous cooperative initiatives in Gusiiland between 1904 and 2002. It sought to contribute to the efforts of the Abagusii community towards the innovation of indigenous cooperative initiatives in Gusiiland as an initiative for the transformation of livelihoods. The study was guided by the following objectives; to trace the nature and growth of indigenous cooperative initiatives in Gusiiland, to analyse the effects of colonial policies, culture and practices of European settlement in Gusiiland and to investigate the role of indigenous cooperative initiatives and its impact on the transformation of people‘s livelihoods in Gusiiland. The research study employed two theories: first, modernization theory which postulates that a break from ‗primitive‘ traditional society is necessary for that society to attain large production status. The other theory used was dependency and underdevelopment which asserts that resources flow from a ‗periphery‘ of poor nations to the ‗core‘ of rich nations and thus enriching the latter at the expense of the former. Consequently, poor economies are integrated into the free market economy; commonly known as world systems. The study was conducted in Gusiiland. The population of the study was sampled from the nine sub-counties of Kisii County using the snowballing sampling technique. Further, internet sources and libraries were widely utilized as secondary materials. In addition, the study used primary sources of data collection which included oral interviews and archival evidence. Descriptive method was used to analyse data collected from the field thereafter. The basis of this study was the rationale for the emergence and sprouting of indigenous cooperative initiatives in Gusiiland towards transforming livelihoods in the community and the unity of purpose ensured not only food security, but also ensured societal welfare was bound and that relative peace and security was maintained. Further, findings were also evident that indigenous cooperative initiatives created a chain of bond among the Abagusii which still exists to date. However, it was also noted that European settlement in Gusiiland was forthwith occasioned with the introduction of new policies, culture and practices which altogether worked to the destruction of the existing structures. Hence, societal bond among the Abagusii has since grown cold, and the unity of purpose greatly weakened. Nevertheless, a chain of bond still exists amongst the Abagusii; as evidenced in the emergence and mushrooming of social groupings whose aim is to assist one another at all times – something that follows them even to their places of work and residence.

Role Of The Church In Conflict Resolution: A Case of Abagusii And Kipsigis Christians In Borabu-Sotik Border, Kenya
Nyang’au, James Machani
Cross-border conflicts have long been a persistent issue in various parts of the world, including
Africa. Particularly in Africa, countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Sudan,
Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia, the Central African Republic,
Mali, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Chad, and Uganda. Kenya, in particular, has witnessed its share
of ethnic and community conflicts. This has continued despite efforts by the government and
non-governmental organizations to establish preventive and peace initiatives. The Borabu-
Sotik border has been a hotspot for such conflicts, marked by recurring disputes between the
communities living there. Various mediation groups, peace committees, and police stations
have been established to mitigate these conflicts, yet they persist. The persistence of these
conflicts suggests that existing measures are insufficient and that new approaches are needed.
This study therefore aims to assess the role of the church in managing these conflicts among
the bordering communities in Borabu-Sotik, with a specific focus on: analyzing the nature and
causes of conflict, identifying the strategies employed by the church, evaluating local church
initiatives, and assessing the extent to which communal organized group prayer initiatives have
contributed to conflict management in the region. The study was anchored on the Christian-
Based Recovery Theory and Social Conflict Theory, which guided the analysis of the church's
restorative role and the underlying dynamics of communal conflict, respectively.
The study employed descriptive statistics and a qualitative research design. The research
included all churches at the Borabu-Sotik border, including Seventh-day Adventist (SDA),
Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG), and Catholic churches, among others. The population
comprised 7,738 respondents from various churches. A sample of 392 respondents was selected
using simple random and purposive sampling methods, including 35 church leaders and 357
church members. Stratified random sampling was used to select respondents, who were
provided with questionnaires, while key informants, including Christian leaders, were
interviewed. A pilot study was conducted at churches along the Borabu-Sotik border prior to
the main data collection to test the validity and reliability of the research instruments, and
necessary adjustments were made based on the results. Data collection tools included interview
schedules for church leaders and questionnaires for church members. The study employed
descriptive statistics, such as percentages, means, and standard deviations, to analyze the data
using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.
The findings revealed that conflicts were primarily triggered by factors such as idle youth, land
disputes, cattle rustling, and unemployment. The study also highlighted the significant role of
local church organized prayer group initiatives, including prayer meetings, charitable activities,
and Christian teachings, in enhancing social cohesion and conflict resolution. The findings
further underscore the need for churches to strengthen mediation efforts and address the root
causes of conflict, particularly among youth. Overall, this study demonstrates that churches
significantly impact social cohesion and conflict resolution through charitable activities,
community engagement, and interdenominational efforts along the Borabu-Sotik border.
Further research should examine the church's role in addressing diverse conflicts across Kenya,
including gender-based violence, pastoralist disputes, ethno-political tensions, and resource-
related issues. Studies in other border regions beyond Borabu-Sotik would also strengthen the
validity and generalizability of these findings.

Role Of Small Christian Communities In Evangelization In Tabaka Catholic Parish, Kisii Diocese, Kenya
Momanyi, Annamaria Kemunto
The purpose of small Christian communities is engaged in the church mission, which
is evangelization. They are able to reach others by visiting the sick, poor, helping the
church financially and by spiritual nourishment. This work cannot be done by a few. It
needs active participation so that they can help in evangelization. However, there is low
attendance in weekly meetings and members seem not to take their evangelization role
seriously. The aim of this thesis was to assess the role of small Christian communities
in evangelization in Tabaka Parish, Kisii Diocese. The study was guided by the
following study objectives: To examine the consistency of members to small Christian
community meetings in evangelization, to evaluate the commitment to charitable
activities by small Christian community members in evangelization and to analyze the
dedication to church contribution in evangelization among members of small Christian
communities. Participatory church theory and mission dei theory were used. The study
used a descriptive research design to describe the role of small Christian communities
in evangelization. The study targeted a population of 776 with the sample size of 237
respondents. This was according to Mugenda & Mugenda (2003) who said that a
sample size of 30% is appropriate for a population of less than 1000. Simple random
method, purposive method and censors was used to collect data. Prior to the main study,
a pilot study was conducted. Data collection was done through questionnaires,
interview schedules and participant observation was done in selected small Christian
communities. Data was analyzed using thematic and narrative approach. Data was
presented through tables, verbatim reports, graphs and pie charts. The study found out
that active participation is needed more in small Christian communities. The results
showed that members lag behind because of poverty 97(43.7%), lack of interest 91
(41%), lack of commitment 85 (38.3%), work 88 (39.7%), ignorance 83 (37.4), hard
economic times 99 (41.9%) and lack of transparency in financial matters 81 (36.5). The
study recommends that the church and SCC leaders should put a lot of emphasis on the
importance of joining SCC and actively participating in the weekly meetings, activities
and programmes. The study findings may be instrumental in the Catholic Church in
Tabaka Parish on the importance of active participation of members in SCC.
